Announcing the Doris Lupien Memorial Scholarship for STEM

March 8, 2024 Candia Dollars for Scholars® is pleased to announce the establishment of the new Doris Lupien Memorial Scholarship for STEM, honoring the legacy of a long-time volunteer. This scholarship aims to empower and support aspiring students pursuing higher education in STEM fields, reflecting Doris Lupien's dedication to learning.

Regarding the inspiration to establish this scholarship, Doris' children, Lynne and Jeff Lupien, say, "our mom, Doris, inspired us by volunteering in our community. She enjoyed her time on Candia Dollars for Scholars, and she always valued our education. When she passed two years ago from cancer, far too early, we lost the beating heart of our family. We both ended up in tech, so it seemed not only fitting to fund a scholarship in Mom's name, but to focus it in STEM, particularly tech and science. We hope that by helping recipients with this scholarship, we can leave the world a little better than we found it, something we think Mom would be proud of."

Applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a degree program related to Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). Candia Dollars for Scholars® encourages all qualified students to submit their applications before the deadline of April 1.

In addition to this scholarship, other scholarships are available to local high school seniors, current college students and older adult learners in support of their studies at two- and four-year colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools. Those interested can learn more and apply online at www.candia.dollarsforscholars.org.

New CYAA Yellow Jackets Scholarship Honoring Jamie Brennan and Sean MacDonald

February 25, 2023 - In 2011-2021, a group of Candia residents came together to create the Jamie Brennan Scholarship. The committee's goal was to award $1000 annually to former Candia Youth Athletic Association athletes for a period of 10 years. The first recipients were selected in 2012 and was sustained for 11 years, one year beyond the original goal.

As the ten-year timeline for the Jamie Brennan Scholarship approached, the CYAA Board expressed an interest helping continue the fund. After Sean MacDonald's passing in September 2021, his parents and brother suggested donations to CYAA in Sean's name for a yet-to-be-determined use. The family later decided to have these monies dedicated to a scholarship. In 2022, the CYAA Board approved to transition the Jamie Brennan Scholarship to the CYAA Yellow Jackets Scholarship Honoring Jamie Brennan and Sean MacDonald.

Qualified applicants must be former Candia Youth Athletic Association athletes, regardless of town of residence; have participated in two or more seasons in CYAA recreational and/or travel sports; and provide a written statement addressing what being a CYAA athlete meant to them.

This new scholarship is among ten others offered this year by the Candia Dollars for Scholars chapter. Other aid is targeted to local high school seniors, current college students and older adult learners in support of their studies at two- and four-year colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools.

Once a Yellow Jacket, Always a Yellow Jacket

Those Honored

Jamie BrennanJamie Brennan:

Jamie was a Henry W. Moore School student/athlete and CYAA basketball and soccer athlete who was part of the 2008 State Championship U13 Yellow Jackets soccer team. Jamie was the ultimate teammate. Coaches and players could rely on Jamie being upbeat, smiling broadly, and exuding enthusiasm whether at practice or during a game and whether he was in the game or cheering on his teammates from the sidelines.

As a result of complications from Juvenile Diabetes, Jamie's family and community lost him Labor Day weekend 2009 at the start of his seventh-grade year. His Yellow Jackets jersey hangs in the CYAA indoor facility along with his team's championship banner.

Sean MacDonaldSean MacDonald:

Sean started his long and successful sports career on the fields and courts of the CYAA and the Henry W. Moore School. Sean was a member of the Yellow Jackets team that earned State Championship titles in 2004 and 2005.

After aging-out of CYAA sports, Sean earned credentials to become a soccer referee and was often seen on the CYAA fields. At times this meant officiating games in which his younger brother, Evan, was playing and his father, Ray, was coaching.

A standout basketball and soccer athlete at Memorial and Central High Schools, Sean captained Central to their first championship. In his junior hear of high school, Sean was selected for the New England Revolution Academy Team.

Sean went on to play college soccer at Southern New Hampshire University his freshman year then transferred to Methodist University where he played sophomore through senior years and was selected as captain both his junior and senior years. During college, Sean coached at Liberty Point Academy in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After returning to the area Sean coached for Seacoast United Bedford.

The CCWC Continuing Education Memorial Scholarship will aid women like CCWC scholarship coordinator Gale Stanley, who returned to school in her early 50's to pursue a master's degree.

Candia Dollars for Scholars® Hopes to Attract Critical Support for Local Students

February 11, 2021 - The Candia Dollars for Scholars® chapter is reaching out to local businesses, organizations and individuals interested in investing in a young person's future.

For more than 25 years, the group has helped local students pursue their career goals through scholarships that help defray education costs. Several scholarships made possible by Candia organizations and businesses are distributed each year to local high school seniors and current college students in support of their studies at two- and four-year colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools.

Scholarship applications for Candia residents will soon be accepted for the 2021-22 academic year, says chapter director Colleen Bolton, "but we need financial assistance to support our efforts going into the coming year."

Donations will help defray operating and other costs, as the chapter continues to meet the needs of young people planning to or attending school.  Says Bolton: "Your donation, large or small, is an investment in the future of bright, talented and motivated Candia students."

She adds that an anonymous donor will match the first $200 raised and anyone donating can also offer to match donor amounts.

Those interested in donating can access an online form on the website, www.candia.dollarsforscholars.org. To learn more about donation matches, email colleen.bolton@comcast.net.

Those planning to apply for aid can visit candia.dollarsforscholars.org and click on the "student and parent" tab to complete the on-line application.  The deadline to apply is May 1 for awards distributed for the 2020-21 academic year.
